In a significant move to support female artists in the Malayalam film industry, the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA) has launched a 24-hour toll-free number (8590599946) to address complaints related to workplace harassment. This initiative, effective from September 25, aims to provide a safe platform for women to report grievances. The helpline will be operated by female employees and ensures that serious complaints will be followed up with legal action.
The decision comes in response to the findings of the Hema Committee report, which brought to light the challenging working conditions and persistent sexual harassment faced by women in Malayalam cinema. The 2017 incident involving a well-known actress who was assaulted led to the formation of the committee, chaired by Justice Hema, to investigate gender bias and abuse in the industry.
Actress Radhika Sarathkumar recently broke the silence and said, “The harassment happens to each of us, how come men don’t know about it? Maybe the male actors compartmentalize, maybe they choose not to see it. It’s very sad that every time the onus is on the women to protect themselves.”
This toll-free service marks a crucial step in addressing these issues, offering a voice to women who have often remained unheard. FEFKA’s initiative is expected to bring much-needed attention to the systemic problems within the industry, while also providing an accessible channel for female artists to seek justice.
